Overview
Ireland is home to several universities in the QS World University Rankings. The rankings are based on a methodology which assesses each university on nine indicators including academic and employer reputations, research impact, sustainability, and more. 2025 was a positive year for Irish universities in a global context, with eight universities increasing their global ranking.

Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI)
Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), the state agency responsible for the external quality assurance of further and higher education and training in Ireland, has announced the first group of 28 higher education institutions to be awarded the TrustEd Ireland statutory quality mark, reinforcing Ireland’s reputation as a trusted destination for international learners.

Trinity College Dublin (TCD)
Trinity College Dublin is ranked #1 in Ireland and 75th in the world (QS World University Rankings 2026). Founded in 1592, the University is steeped in history with a reputation for excellence in education, research, and innovation. Located on an iconic campus in the heart of Dublin's city centre, Trinity has over 22,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students across three faculties — Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Engineering, Mathematics and Science; and Health Sciences. Trinity ranks in the top 100 in 22 subjects (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025).
Trinity College Dublin did well across all indicators in this year's rankings including academic reputation, international research network, and employment outcomes. It is the only Irish member of the prestigious League of European Research Universities and boasts an impressive list of alumni including writers Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett, scientists William Rowan Hamilton and Ernest Walton, and political thinker Edmund Burke.
University College Dublin (UCD)
University College Dublin had another successful year, rising by eight places, and is now close to being ranked as one of the 100 top universities in the world. UCD's flexible curriculum and research-led learning taught by top academic staff mean that students graduate with an internationally accredited degree from a university which is within the top one percent of institutions worldwide. UCD is Ireland's largest university with nearly 40,000 students.
University College Cork (UCC)
UCC improved its overall rank by 27 places in the QS World University Rankings 2025–2026, placing it inside the world's top 250 universities. UCC is the only Irish university to have been ranked inside the top 10 in the world for its work on one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals — SDG 2: Zero Hunger. Founded in 1849, UCC has a student population of over 20,000.
University of Galway
University of Galway is ranked 284 in the 2026 QS World University Ranking. In the most recent edition, University of Galway achieved a global rank in 25 subjects, with top 100 rankings for Hospitality, Nursing, and English Language & Literature. The University of Galway was founded in 1845 and has grown massively in both size and reputation, now having a student population of over 18,000. It places a strong focus on the employability of its graduates, with 96 percent working or in further education six months after graduating.
University of Limerick (UL)
The University of Limerick ranks 401st according to the QS World University Rankings 2026, demonstrating an improving trend. Located along the River Shannon, the University of Limerick has strong links to business and industry, and its graduates experience a 15 percent higher employment rate than the national average. The school pioneered the concept of Cooperative Education in Ireland, placing over 2,000 students in paid work experience placements, 30 percent of which are located abroad.
Dublin City University (DCU)
DCU is now the top-ranked Young University in Ireland, ahead of Maynooth University, the University of Limerick, and Technological University Dublin. DCU excels in International Outlook, Citations Score, and Research Reputation and Outputs. The university is #1 in Ireland and 138th in the world for its research quality, which measures citation impact, research influence, strength, and excellence.
Maynooth University
Maynooth University ranks 771–780 according to the QS World University Rankings 2026. It is highly regarded for geography, English language and literature, education and training, and arts and humanities. Maynooth was established as an autonomous university in 1997 but traces its roots back to the Royal College of Saint Patrick, founded in 1795.
Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin)
TU Dublin is one of Ireland's first technological universities, founded in 2019. The school specialises in STEM fields and is incredibly diverse, with over 28,000 students of over 140 different nationalities. It has five campuses in total: three within the city of Dublin and two more located in the nearby areas of Blanchardstown and Tallaght.
